Of all the
challenges today’s teachers face —overcrowded classrooms, outdated
textbooks, equipment shortages — student apathy might be
the most intractable. Barraged almost nonstop by media and
information, kids are tough customers to reach. One sure way to
bridge the divide is through applied learning — bolstering classroom
lessons with real-world examples. Engage the senses and you engage
the student. Ideally suited for this activity,
the National Parks are much in demand by curricula developers and
teachers. But while the education potential of the parks is
unlimited, the funds to realize it are not. That’s where the
National Park Foundation comes in: parlaying the education emphasis
of industry leaders such as Exxon and Toyota USA into million-dollar
programs that get results. |
