Of all the challenges today’s teachers face —overcrowded classrooms, outdated textbooks, equipment shortages — student apathy might be
the most intractable. Barraged almost nonstop by media and information, kids are tough customers to reach. One sure way to bridge the divide is through applied learning — bolstering classroom lessons with real-world examples. Engage the senses and you engage the student. Ideally suited for this activity,
the National Parks are much in demand by curricula developers and teachers. But while the education potential of the parks is unlimited, the funds to realize it are not. That’s where the National Park Foundation comes in: parlaying the education emphasis of industry leaders such as Exxon and Toyota USA into million-dollar programs that get results.
