From an untitled health education talk:

... Now, of the people with their hands up, how many of you make salt-free popcorn? OK, of the people who still have their hands up, how many of you make salt-free popcorn that’s also low-fat popcorn? See, that’s why it’s hard to find that stuff in the supermarket.

What’s my point? In its natural state, corn – including popcorn – is pretty healthy food. Good source of nutrients, fiber, low in cholesterol – you know all that. Tastes good, too. But by the time you add oil, butter and salt, you wind up with something that takes little like corn, and isn’t very good for your heart, blood pressure, and weight.

So, why doesn’t everybody eat low-fat, low-salt popcorn? Because, like tofu, we think we don’t like it. In fact, maybe that should be the modern American motto: If it’s good for us, we don’t like it.
